The Scottish Borders Centre for Clay
Target Shooting
Sunday 13 May: longhope All Round
Sunday felt more like mid winter than the middle of May - a keen wind played merry hell with the targets and water logged traps caused uncharacteristic breakdowns, particularly affecting the Skeet layout. Despite all that 34 guns shot four different disciplines with a possible total score of 80 at stake.
The Sporting element of day consisted a 6 stand 30 bird layout. Davy Craig (Edinburgh) had the best of it missing only 2 clays to win outright on 28 ex 30. His brother, John (also Edinburgh)tied runner-up slot with Dave Allison (Hawick) on 27 with Midge Little (Clovenfords), Donald Livingston (Edinburgh) and Stu Dawson (Bedlington) the other Sporting prize winners on 26.
Four clubmates shared the top slot on the 10 shot DTL Layout refereed by Eric Conn (Dunbar). Davy Craig, Michael Biggs (Kelso), Colin Scott(Roberton) and Hugh Sadler (Hawick) all shot 7. A further six guns took prizes for the second highest score of 6.
Sadler went on to win the adaptation of Skeet refereed by Stewart Donaldson (Dunglass) outright scoring 14 ex a possible 15. Young Cumbrian Joe Davidson, just turned 14, shared 2nd place with Donald Livingston, Tam Patterson (Galashiels), and Chris Cotton (Edinburgh) on 13.
Joe Baumgart (Hawick) very generously gave up his day's shooting to take control of the Compact Sporting Layout. Here John Ross (Whitburn) shared the lead with Nigel Rock (Kelso) breaking 21 ex 25. Jim McPhillips (Bathgate) Davy Craig and Dave Allison all broke 19 with a further two prizes awarded for the 3rd score of 18.
The outcome of this mixed bag of scores revealed no less than five guns sharing the highest score of the day, 61 ex 80. Jim McPhillips, Davy Craig, Donald Livingston, Hugh Sadler and Nigel Rock all picked up a case of cartridges for their efforts and agreed to share the Crystal trophy till next year.
The Sporting calendar returns to it's normal bi-weekly slot this Sunday when Kyle Smith has the opportunity to defend the Ian Hume Shield. Entries close at Noon. All welcome.

Sunday 6 May 2012: Hull Cartridge Company South of Scotland Area Championship

On Sunday Braidwood hosted the Hull Cartridge Company 100 Registered South of Scotland Sporting Championship. Mike Haw, representing Hull, travelled up from East Yorkshire to present the prizes. Fortunately, earlier predictions of miserable wet weather proved off beam and the whole event went off without a drop. Everyone competing was given a box of 25 Hull SuperFast cartridges with compliments of the Ground and Hull put a further 5250 shells up as Class prizes.
Eighty nine guns faced the challenge of the 10 stand course set up by Ground owner, Jim Black. The verdict, good targets with exception of No 6 which most stumped. Edith Barnes (Crieff), the top Lady shot of the day, and Alex Brown (Newtongrange) shared the top score there on 7 ex 10. The signature High Pheasant on No 1 was elevated presenting a midi with a standard on report - Jim Brodie (Denholm) one of only two guns to clean the stand all day.
Two A Class guns, Jim Somerville and Tony Maher topped the leaderboard on 84 ex 100 but as Maher couldn't wait till the end to take part in a shoot-off Somerville was crowned High Gun collecting his share of the purse together with 750 shells donated by Hull. In his absence, runner-up Maher, was awarded winner of the Class and 500 shells.
Braidwood regular, Stuart Donaldson (Musselburgh) shot 83 to retain the South Area Trophy and top AA. Darren Smith who also shot 83 had left the ground early to travel north avoiding the need for a shoot-off to determine the outcome whilst Ian Smith lay just one behind on 82.
B Class and 250 Hull cartridges for highest Veteran score fell to Roy McCowan (Gretna) who broke 80. Once again the highest score was shared by John Petrie who had also left the Ground to travel north. Jamie McKinninon and James Carter tied 3rd place on 76.
Visiting from Ayrshire, Billy Paton had the highest score in C Class breaking 73 just a single point of Melanie Thomson (Loanhead). Nigel Rock (Kelso) took 3rd place on 71.
Although there was no money at stake for those shooting Birds Only, in recognition of their support to the event 250 Super Fast cartridges were also awarded to the highest gun, Andy Gach (North Berwick) who was also the top scoring Junior of the day on 81.

it was great to see so much support from our own ground members making up half the field. A huge thank you to all who shot with us and especially to Mike Haw, representative of main sponsors Hull, who drove north to be with us for the day.
Thanks again

Donald Livingston does it agai Sunday 22 April 2012: Trophy With No Name
Sunday belonged to Donald Livingston as he won the Braidwood 'Trophy with no Name', this his second win from the first two qualifying Summer Series events, and finished the day with the highest Aggregate score securing the top gun title. Livingston (Edinburgh) only missed two clays on Stand 8, considered the most difficult targets of the day, to come in first on 38 ex 40, two clays clear of Davie Scott (Haddington). Scott and Jake Melrose (Walkerburn) were the only two guns to clean Stand 8 all day - no mean feat!
Neil Cattanach (Innerliethen) made the best of the, by then, inclement weather to win the second layout with 37ex 40. Livingston shared the runner up slot one behind with Nigel Rock (Kelso) and Jim McPhillips (Bathgate). Junior gun, Ryan Stewart (Melrose) shot his best ever round to finish with the third highest score of 35.
The man on fire, Livingston, shrugged off the wet to conclude the this week's shooting on 74 ex 80. Cattanach, Rock and John Ross (Whitburn) all shot a total of 67 ex 80, McPhillips and Scott 65. Young Mr Stewart lay just one behind on 64 alongside Colin Scott (Hawick) and Ali Cumming (Galashiels)

Sunday 8 April 2012: Yarrow Trophy
Easter Sunday and Easter Eggs then theme for the competition prizes at Braidwood. After the wintry conditions earlier in the week things improved significantly for the first qualifying event of the 2012 Summer Series.
Donald Livingston (Edinburgh) kicked off his campaign with a clear win over the first layout scoring 37 ex 40 to claim the Yarrow Trophy. Runner up slot was shared by two guns on 36, Rab Neil (North Berwick) and Davy Craig (Edinburgh), while a further four clubmates were only a single point behind them.
Although Livingston went on to shoot a creditable 34 over Layout Two it was only enough to tie the fourth highest score of the afternoon. Gordon Boertien (Lockerbie) just missed out on the perfect 40 to finish one ahead of Neil Cattanach (Innerliethen). Craig and Jim Brodie (Denholm) had the third highest score of 36.
This second round win coupled with his earlier score of 35 gave Boertien an overall score of 74 and the day's Aggregate title. In what turned out a high scoring day 4 other guns made 70 or more. Craig, Brodie, Livingston and Cattanach broke 72, 71, 71 and 70 respectively.

Sunday 25 March 2012: Winter Series Shoot Off and Best of Rest Trophy

Yet another fantastic mid-summer’s day in March!
On Sunday Donald Livingston set out to defend the Winter Series title over the course set by Jim Black and refereed by clubmate, Joe Baumgart (Hawick). Livingston and Jim Brodie (Denholm) were joint favourites with an average winter placing of 1½ . Stuart Dawson (Bedlington), Gordon Boertien Lockerbie), Rab Neil (North Berwick), John Ross (Whitburn) and wild card, Keith Learmonth (Heriot) also had glory in sight only 80 targets between any one of them and victory.
The result of the 2011 – 2012 Winter Series Championship was quite clear cut! Jim Brodie the undisputed title holder on a total score of 75 ex 80.
Brodie began his attack on the trophy early carding 36 ex 40 over the first layout, a full 3 points clear of Boertien, Dawson and Livingston. After a short break they headed out on to Layout 2 where Brodie proceeded to give a demonstration in shooting. Unbelievably to those watching and Brodie himself, he missed one of the easiest clays of the day to fall just short of a perfect 40. Ross and Learmonth made up for weaker first halves by popping in 38 and 36 ex 40 respectively, Learmonth sharing the 3rd slot with Boertien.
Running alongside the Shoot Off event another 50+ guns took part in the regular 40/40 sporting competition over the same targets. Stuart Donaldson (Musselburgh) rose to the challenge securing the Best of the Rest Shield from a score of 36 ex 40. Tam Patterson (Galashiels) shot a blinder to make runner-up slot just a single clay less on 35 while third place was split between a pack of 6 members all on 33.
Round Two went to a 3 way tie between Eric Forster (Heriot), Jack Carlyle (Dalton) and Lindsay Gordon (Preston Pans) who all broke 38 ex 40. George Brown (Cumbria) shared the next highest score 37 with Trophy winner Donaldson.
When overall scores were tallied Donaldson was revealed as the Aggregate winner breaking 73 ex 80. Forster, Carlyle, Dave Allison (Hawick) and Kyle Smith (Dunbar) were closest at 69.
The end of Winter Series Draw also took place with all qualifying guns being entered into a raffle for £100 voucher. Having left the ground early, Tam Clapham (Peebles) wasn’t present to learn of his good fortune as his name was pulled out of the hat.

Sunday 11 March 2012: Gamekeeper Statue and Junior Shield

Shooters arriving at Braidwood for the last qualifying shoot of the winter series on Sunday were greeted by a warm and sunny day befitting the middle of July. This was much to the consternation of guns from further a field. Even those as close as Peebles reported fog, rain and distinct coolness on departure arriving with winter coats and waterproofs on a day when definitely T shirts would do! There’s no doubt that a beautiful day contributes to an all round genial atmosphere. That combined with some excellent targets contributed to a high scoring day.
Struan Brodie (Denholm) missed an overhead on his last stand otherwise he’d have finished the trophy round on 39 ex 40. Never the less, his excellent 38 was sufficient to win the Gamekeeper Statue outright, Gorge Brown (Cumbria), Rab Neil (North Berwick) and Gordon Boertien (Lockerbie) just one behind on 37. A further 30 guns broke 30 or more.
Running in parallel, those aged 18 and under shot for the Junior Shield. Young Joe Davidson (Cockermouth) who has only recently started shooting with a 12 bore broke 29 to lift his first Braidwood Trophy. Michael Nairn (Galashiels) was second a mere 2 clays ahead of Ryan Stewart (Melrose) while 12 year old Lewis Hislop (Selkirk) shot 18 in his first ever competitive event.
The second layout saw two guns tie the lead on 37. Jim Brodie (Denholm) and Kyle Smith (Dunbar) shared a four clay advantage over the remaining guns, Dick McCallam (Cockermouth), John Crag (Edinburgh), Lindsay Gordon (Preston Pans) and Stuart Rankine (Jedburgh) all finishing on 33 with another 8 shooters including Layout One winner, Brodie Jnr, right up there on 32.
Brodie Junior may have taken the Trophy from his father but despite both he and Smith carding overall scores of 70 ex 80, once again Brodie Senior dug deep to win the day’s Aggregate title with his total score of 72.
